SEE YOUR WORK TRAVEL THROUGH THE LENS OF ADVENTURE!
SEE YOUR WORK TRAVEL THROUGH THE LENS OF ADVENTURE!
In 1993, at age 17, I took my first international business trip. Hong Kong was the destination. There I knew I could find popular brand products at competitive prices which I would resell back in the Philippines. At that time brands like Esprit, Guess, Marks & Spencer, Bossini, Giordano, Adidas, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ralph Lauren were big sellers among teens. I searched the outlet malls for bargains in Lantau Island, Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and the alleys of Mong Kok.
After three nights and four days of shopping, I had enough product to fill three large suitcases and a carry-on backpack full of retail goodies to resell for a profit back home. I traveled to Hong Kong three more times, venturing farther out each trip, and eventually adding Macau and then mainland China to my itinerary. I am curious by nature and from the start I mixed my work (shopping) with play (sightseeing). I enjoyed the hunt for the next "IT" thing in retail while immersing myself in the adventure of discovery that travel offered.
My love of international adventure was a major factor in my decision to pursue International Studies in college. In 1994, I was part of the delegation participating in the International Students Festival in Trondheim, Norway, (ISFit). For eight weeks I represented my college in this multi-national conference attended by students from over 140 countries and dignitaries such as Gro Harlem Bruntland and the Dalai Lama. On that trip, in addition to Norway, I visited Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France and the USA.. After this experience I was hooked for life!
After college, I moved to the USA, got married, had two wonderful kids and managed two businesses in the Prop/Costume & Toy Industries and never stopped traveling. As of this writing, I've experienced twenty-seven countries and sixty-eight cities around the world including: Canada, United Kingdom, Iceland, Italy, The Holy See (Vatican), Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Japan, Mexico, Peru and Qatar. I've traveled by air, train, car, cruise ship, canoe, and donkey. (Donkey is not so good.) I won't live long enough to go all the places I want to explore, but I'm going to see as many as I can.
I'm hoping that this blog/vlog will help you see your work travel through the lens of adventure!
